Music
April 11, 2008
I had a conversation with a work colleague this morning about music and what’s out on the market these days. I know most people my age (30-something) seem to have a problem with the music of the time like hip-hop, R&B, etc. The quality of rock music was the discussion this morning and that has been heated debates by me in the past!
Ok, I reckon most of us just need to adapt to change a bit more. I remember when I was little how older people use to complain about the music back then and i distinctly remember rebelling against it. Man, they just didn’t wanna be funky like us. Is that us now too? I say today and yesterdays music (Led Zeppilin, Rolling Stones, etc.) will be the Beatles and Elvis Presley of the future- there are people who still listen to it, but is it mainline tunes…? “…they don’t make’m like they use to…” B.S.
I don’t think you have to like the music you hear but at least adapt to the time. Not to contradict myself but there’s very little of the current rock music that I like. Rock has gone to shit in quality/ length/ topics and is completely predictable. They seem to want to stick to old music formats and use it in the modern times. I mean, they are playing with instruments that was developed in the 50’s… and they call it modern!?
That is why I like the electronic music advances of the past decade or so. They are the driving force behind hip-hop, drum & bass, breaks, etc. Love it or hate it, electronic music changed music. From the disco days in the 80’s, house in the 90’s, to electronic bands of today like Goldfish. (PS. How awesome are they! The Jean Michelle Jarre of the new millenium). It is the way music will move in the next decades I think.
Thank you U2, Madonna, etc that started the move in a new rock/pop direction. At least I can enjoy most of whats out there and not hold on to my old records and talk about days gone by.
well.. “they don’t make’m like they use to”,
Hip-hop is lame.
The music industry is in a bind, but it’s not about music piracy. Same as the film industry realised.. poor quality and lack of talent does not sell.
Word of mouth is more powerful than broadcast advertising. Through a few more conversations like these, hopefully people will realise the sad state of the music industry.
KFM and 5FM sucks.
ps. Goldfish rocks.
Music is such a personal thing and is also very objective. I can listen to Vivaldi for hours on end, but this would drive you nuts!
But, to be honest with you, I agree with most of what you say. The ‘modern’ artist are devoid of talent (in most cases) and it’s all just a little bit of the same over and over again… (Justin Timberlake vs ‘whoever’ a case in point)
Just a thought, use it, don’t use it…
Joe,
your comment “Hip-hop is lame” is more or less what I’m refering when I say 30′ish must adapt more to change. Wonder what you’ll say when your little girl was to pitch one of these days with baggy pants, chewing bubblegum and tappin’ her feet to a gangster-rap tune…
“…resistance is futile…”
Billy,
I’m one of those people who can listen to Vivaldi (of whom I’ve got a cd at home by the way), U2, Slayer, and then Paul Oakenfold or trance.
I must admit, to listen to Vivaldi for hours will drive me up the wall. But, love it or hate it, at least have the patience to listen to it and try and see the sense in it?
Millions of listeners to Hip Hop and Justin Timberlake, etc can’t be suffering from mass delusion!
